Season of Thankfulness Series: Cameron
The Gift of the Unknown
Ever since I was a child, I have reveled in the power of information. Growing up in the “Information Age,” I marveled at how the collective sum of human intelligence could be distilled into something small enough to carry in my pocket. The ability to summon knowledge at will—whether for school, curiosity, or problem-solving—felt almost magical. I remember being fascinated by encyclopedias, and later by the internet, which seemed limitless in its potential. What an incredible power it is—to access anything, anywhere, with a simple glance at my phone. It made me feel capable, even invincible, as though no question could go unanswered and no mystery could remain unsolved.
Over time, however, I found myself drawn to something else entirely: the allure of the unknown. What once terrified me as a child—the dark room at the end of the hallway, the mysterious space under my bed, the boogeyman lurking in my closet—slowly transformed into a source of fascination. The shadows that once symbolized fear became symbols of possibility. Rather than fearing what I couldn’t see or understand, I began to embrace it, wondering what secrets or adventures might lie within. This shift wasn’t sudden; it evolved as I realized that answers, though satisfying, often paled in comparison to the thrill of discovery and the richness of curiosity.
This shift in perspective has invariably been driven by my commitment to lifelong learning. Despite the ease of finding answers with a quick search, I left behind the pursuit of mere information in favor of something deeper: knowledge. Information is easy to collect—it’s abundant, always a query away—but true knowledge requires patience, reflection, and, most importantly, humility. Growth, I’ve realized, does not come from hoarding what I know like a dragon guarding its treasure. Instead, it comes from recognizing the vastness of what I don’t know and allowing that humility to drive me forward. Every twist and turn in life has become an opportunity to learn and grow. Each experience reminds me that the concept of “arrival” is a myth—there is no final destination, only a continuous journey.
It is with this awareness that I give thanks for the unknown and, even more, for the unknowable. The unknown offers not only mystery but freedom—the chance to unyoke myself from the burdens of expectation and omniscience. In the unknowable, I find a sense of wonder that grounds me in the present moment. It is here, in this space, that the greatest insights often arise: when I find the biggest answers in the smallest places and recognize that my greatest strengths have been cultivated during life’s most trying times. It’s the trials, the uncertainty, and the humility they demand that build the bridge between information and true knowledge.
So, let each day serve as a reminder of this truth: when the ominous darkness of the unknown rises to meet you, see it not as an enemy but as an ally. Embrace the humility it brings, for it is this humility that bridges the gap between what we know and what we have yet to understand. The unknown holds the potential for transformation, growth, and even gratitude, if only we have the courage to face it.
